Cracked Screen: Repair It, Protect It, or Live With It?

Cracked Screen: Repair It, Protect It, or Live With It?

A cracked screen is the most common repair in our lab — roughly four in ten devices that come through the door. But not every crack needs the same response. Here is how we triage them on the bench.

When you can wait

A single hairline crack in a corner, away from the display area, with touch working perfectly? That is cosmetic. It will not spread quickly if you fit a case and a tempered glass protector to hold the fragments in place. Keep it dry — a crack is an open door for moisture — and repair it when convenient.

When you should not wait

Spiderweb cracks across the display, black spots or lines, flickering, ghost touches, or glass lifting from the frame all mean active damage. A lifting screen can slice a battery; ghost touches can lock you out or pocket-dial. And shattered glass sheds micro-fragments that scratch fingers and the camera lens. These need a repair this week, not this quarter.

What a screen replacement actually involves

A quality replacement is more than a piece of glass. On modern phones the display is a laminated OLED assembly, and the cheap copies are where “budget” repairs go wrong: washed-out colors, poor brightness, touch lag, and no True Tone. We fit OEM-spec panels, transfer your original sensors, reseal the frame, and test touch, brightness and Face ID before the phone leaves the bench — typically in about 30 minutes.

The cheapest repair is the one you never need

Physics is simple: a case with a raised lip absorbs the corner impacts, and a tempered glass protector sacrifices itself instead of your display. In our intake logs, phones with both are four times less likely to need a screen replacement. The protector costs $13 and installs bubble-free in two minutes; the screen costs $89 to $319 depending on your model.
